In the U.S., legislators are proposing laws that could limit the power of app stores, and the Japan Fair Trade Commission (JFTC) had begun an investigation against Apple. As you would open the subscriptions option, you can view all Apple and third-party apps you are subscribed to. Open the Settings app and tap iTunes & App Store. It can all be viewed in your Apple ID account, stored in Settings. The mandate of the fee and the inability of companies like Spotify to even offer an alternative payment method has become a source of contention legally for Apple. Open the Spotify app and under the Home tab at the bottom of the screen and tap on the Settings cog icon at the top. The basic app is free, but the Premium version comes with a cost. That means if you signed up for Spotify on your iPhone, Spotify had to pay Apple's 30% App Store fee. The problem for Spotify is that it was barred from even providing a link to a payment system outside of Apple's ecosystem from within the app. Spotify is what's known as a "reader" app, which essentially means the app reads content that is purchased or subscribed to, rather than selling a digital good, like a skin in a video game. ![]()
